Line Matters

"What line are you using?" isn't the first question on everyones mind, but anglers should investigate, and put equal weight into their choice of line as they do lures and bait. We all know that the size, color, action and depth of a lure is what determines our success in catching fish; but, can our choice of line ruin the best presentation?

Growing up I didn't think twice about line, I'd just go and pick up the cheapest 10-12 pound mono line I could find. But I remember those frustrating days dealing with birds nests and coming home skunked. Over time I realized that my frustrations were fuelled by my poor choice in fishing line. Once I started experimenting with different diameters of line I quickly found that the thinner the line the further I could cast, and those time consuming birds nests weren't bothering me anymore.

When the realization that diameter of line could have such an impact, it caused me to examine braided and fluorocarbon lines. Here again I noticed a difference in how fast lines would sink, which affects getting lures to the right depth. I also noticed the action of my lure would vary based on line set-ups as well.

Lets not forget color either. I remember one year I happened to grab black wire leaders for pike fishing instead of silver, and found that my success increased. I'm not saying silver leaders are bad, but in that situation I noticed it made a difference, when others around me who were using silver leaders weren't as successful.

I believe that our choice in line is just as important as our choice in lures. Both can work against each other, or with each other determining our success. The cost of fishing line can add up quick, just the same as buying lures, so next time your at the lake or around the campfire, instead of asking about lures and bait, ask about line. The secret to success isn't always in plain sight, so have fun experimenting with various fishing lines, combos and set-ups of lines.
