Phyllis Lake

Phyllis Lake

Phyllis Lake is located 17 kilometres West of Caroline and is visited by plenty of anglers year round because of the Rainbow Trout fishing. It is stocked annually, and has received brood stock for well over a decade, making it a hot destination for anglers looking to catch a big Rainbow in the low teens. Fishing is fair and you might even hook into a Perch, but the lake is generally busy and due to it's small size and limited shore access can become crowded in a hurry.

Phyllis Lake has a small campground, but the un-paved road into the lake/campground area is relatively steep, and should be considered a risk when the ground is frozen or muddy and slippery. There is a boat launch, however, gas powered motors are not allowed to be used, but electric motors are permitted and will suffice for the size of this lake. Phyllis Lake is probably most enjoyed during the week when it isn't so crowded, but it is a fun lake with great potential for catching big fish.

Cameron Lake

Cameron Lake

Cameron Lake is located in Waterton Lakes National park and stretches 2.5 kilometers just hovering between the Canadian/U.S. border. The water is clear and cold, fed by melting ice and snow, and reaches depths of 125 feet. It was stocked between 1921 and 1974 and continues to sustain a population of Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout. Fishing is fair and the average size of fish are modest, however anglers have pulled fish in the upwards of 5 pounds. Shore access is very limited and fishing is best accessed by a boat.

Cameron Lake is well equipped with boat rentals, and a small snack and tackle shop where you can purchase your Waterton Lakes National Park fishing license. They even provide rods and reels and all the tackle you might need to go out. There is also a viewing deck with binoculars that lookout to the south end of the lake where grizzly bears commonly hang out. This lake is an outdoor adventurists dream and is a must see if you visit Waterton Lakes National Park.

Airdrie Pond

Airdrie Pond

Airdrie Pond is located in Nose Creek park on the West side of Airdrie. It is apart of the annual Alberta stock program and receives 500 Rainbow Trout annually. Fish can be seen rising during evening hatches, and are generally an easy catch with small presentations. The stocked Rainbows don't generally grow very big, and some fish do escape into Nose Creek during the spring when there is flooding from the rain. The water quality is poor due to the amount of garbage and random bikes and shopping carts that find their way into the pond, so it is highly recommend that you treat this location as catch and release only.

Airdrie Pond is a great place to have a picnic and teach the kids how to fish. However it is a very small body of water and is a busy location with lots of families with kids and pets, so although shore access is excellent, you will need to be looking over both shoulders before casting with any rod type. But this is a nice close location to burn the last hours of daylight.

Glenmore Reservoir

Glenmore Reservoir

Glenmore Reservoir is located in the South West of Calgary's city limits, and is fed by the Elbow River and is the source of Calgary's drinking water. It has a self sustaining population of Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Mountain Whitefish. Northern Pike are the most common fish caught in the reservoir, but a few Rainbow Trout over 10 pounds are pulled out every year. The west end of the lake is very shallow and has heavy cover from weeds, and is normally fully exposed in the spring when the reservoir water levels are dropped for the spring runoff. Due to the fluctuating water levels of the reservoir fishing in not permitted from November to May.

Glenmore Park is loaded with amenities and is well kept to provide a great outdoor experience for the city of Calgary and visitors. There are walk paths and bike paths throughout the park, with picnic area's that have fire pits and BBQ stands. You can even rent a canoe from the Calgary canoe club on the North end of the park. Glenmore Reservoir is a great place to relax, that's close to home and has something for the whole family to enjoy.
